My name is William, and I've grown up on the beaches of Sydney's Northern Beaches — salt in the air, sand between my toes, and my dog Indie always right beside me.

It was a regular Sunday morning at Freshwater Beach. The kind of morning where the sun is just starting to warm the sand and the waves are rolling in perfectly. I had Indie off-lead in the off-leash area, throwing her ball, watching her tear across the beach the way she always does — full speed, ears back, pure joy.

Then I looked away for a moment. Just a moment.

When I turned back, she was gone.

I called her name. Nothing. I scanned the beach — the water, the dunes, the car park. My heart was hammering. I started jogging, then running, calling her name louder and louder. Other beachgoers started looking around too. A few minutes passed — and I want to tell you they were just a few minutes, but they felt like hours.
